Union County and its municipalities are rapidly growing. Anticipating and addressing transportation issues for all modes is one part of the planning process. Future transportation needs are incorporated in a document called a Comprehensive Transportation Plan, or CTP. The CTP for much of Union County, and all of Waxhaw and Marvin, is maintained by the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO).

Union County, Marvin, and Waxhaw have proposed a series of amendments to the Pedestrian Map for the  Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) . The CRTPO is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Charlotte Urban Area. The CRTPO, along with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), maintain the Comprehensive Plan for the area.
